fs-Laser Microkeratome

The advantage of using the CorneaSurgeon for cornea transplant preparation instead of mechanical devices is it’s gentle principle of operation which leads to a higher survival rate of the endothelial cells and, as a consequence, to less discarded transplants. Moreover it is easy to use with its image guided cutting process, which can create thin flaps (< 100 µm) with high reproducibility.

Principle of Cutting Process

1. The cornea is fixed into an artificial chamber.

The CorneaSurgeon is a femtosecond laser based cutting tool for the preparation of corneal donor tissue. The donor tissue can be used for the most keratoplasty procedures.

Predictable and precise lenticule creation is fundamental for therapeutic lamellar corneal surgery. In DSAEK it is desirable to create thin plano-parallel posterior lamellar grafts, in order to avoid refractive shifts and better tissue adaption after transplantation.

The implementation of real-time OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) visualization of the corneal layers before and after the laser processing enables the surgeon to control and monitor the position of the laser-tissue-interaction. This allows the user to cut flaps / lamellae down to 50 µm thickness.
